This level requires knowledge of the SharePoint platform as a whole:

Describe the global settings available for a Web application, considerations for managing the session state for SSPs, and the best practices for managing site collections.
Describe user profiles, user profile properties, profile policies, and global settings and solutions offered by a My Sites site in MOSS 2007.
Configure audiences to target content in MOSS 2007.
Configure search and indexing in MOSS 2007 by defining the search service settings and managing the search experience for end users.

The primary function will be installing patches and service packs, management of the database back end will be performed by the SQL Server Admin.

Third party companies should manage the code they developed and ensure it stays compatible with SharePoint as Microsoft adds patches.

What Does It Do?

An important element for any SharePoint project management portal application. The Tree View Web Part provides users with the familiar Windows Desktop Explorer navigation, allowing them to manuever through any SharePoint list, document or picture library. Using folders in document libraries and grouping within the list views, users can organize any SharePoint list, library, discussion, wiki or site collection to display the hierarchy within. Users can group and display similar items into folders, such as high priority tasks, making it easier to navigate through large data sets.

How Does It Work?

Folder items are displayed in the left pane while their contents are displayed in the right pane. The user clicks to expand a folder item in the left pane to view sub folders. Users select a folder to view its contents in the right pane. When displaying a SharePoint List, the tree hierarchy is based on the Group By configuration of the selected list view. In other words, if you selected to display your Tree View items in the All Tasks view and you configured the All Tasks view to be grouped by status and then by priority, then each grouping is displayed in the left pane as a folder and displays the items related to that grouping in the left pane. Users can also choose to view items in different views by selecting another view from the Current View drop-down box.

Why Did We Build It?

Widely used for team collaboration, one of SharePoint's main attractions is the ability to quickly build a shared information database through the use of lists. A great feature of the SharePoint list is the ability to create a view where data in the list can be filtered, sorted, and grouped based on your desired parameters. SharePoint comes with default list, spreadsheet or calendar views, but does not provide a tree view. Our Tree View Web Part provides another option for organizing and viewing data in a way that makes sense to you and your team. This view can also help users who are used to navigating their system files and folders with Windows Desktop Explorer make any easier transition to and acceptance of SharePoint.

ASP.NET AJAX promises to usher in the next generation of Web applications. SharePoint 2007 is touted as a top tool for enterprise collaboration and content management.

For even the mildly curious, this begs a question: Can ASP.NET AJAX and SharePoint 2007 work together? For now, the answer is "Yes, but…" with a few caveats.

The possibilities, wrote Mike Ammeraan in a blog entry called Integrating ASP.NET AJAX with SharePoint, include more powerful JavaScript libraries, Web services rendering through JSON (JavaScript Object Notification), and interactive parts.

The catch? Official SharePoint support for ASP.NET AJAX will only arrive with SharePoint 2007 Service Pack 1, Ammeraan said. This is because Microsoft shipped SharePoint 2007 while ASP.NET AJAX was still in beta. (Mary Jo Foley reports that Vista SP1 should arrive by the end of 2007.)

The lack of a Service Pack, though, need not deter developers from integrating the two technologies now, Ammerann noted. Such an integration requires three steps -- installing ASP.NET AJAX onto your server farm, extending SharePoint's web.config files and adding the ASP.NET AJAX Script Manager into your master page. Ammerann provides instructions for all three steps, along with a hint for making the Update Panel work inside SharePoint 2007.

Meanwhile, development tools for integrating ASP.NET AJAX and SharePoint 2007 are beginning to emerge in the blogosphere.

Eric Schoonover has created a base class called AjaxBasePart, which "custom MOSS [Microsoft Office SharePoint Server] Web parts can derive from and fully enables all AJAX Extensions functionality within MOSS." Additional information about AjaxBasePart, and its source code, can be found in Schoonover's blog entry, AjaxBasePart: Easy ASP.NET 2.0 AJAX Extensions 1.0 and Office SharePoint Server 2007.

an Tielens has created a SmartPart, or SharePoint Web part, which allows developers to use ASP.NET AJAX extensions inside a Web User Control and run that control as a SharePoint Web part. Put simply, the SmartPart lets you build Ajax-style controls for SharePoint. This add-in, still in beta, can be downloaded from the SmartPart for SharePoint page on GotDotNet, and additional information and demos are available on Tielens' blog entry, SmartPart for SharePoint -- ASP.NET AJAX Support.

Daniel Larson has created the SharePoint Ajax Toolkit, which comes with SharePoint Solution Package based installer, a Refresh interval programmed into an XMLWebPart and a core framework.

SharePoint is quickly becoming one of Microsoft's most important offerings. Essentially a highly customizable content management system, many companies are finding it a perfect fit for their internal websites.

A key feature of SharePoint is its support for Web Parts. Web Parts are widgets written in ASP.NET to add user customizable functionality to a web site. Architecturally, they fill the gap between controls and full pages.

Microsoft has recently released what they call the Silverlight Blueprint for SharePoint. This is a set of examples and guidance for adding Silverlight-based Web Parts to SharePoint sites. The components included as examples are

Six application component samples are included in the kit to get you started:

• A simple “hello, world” sample showing Silverlight in a Web part.
• A Silverlight slider control as a SharePoint custom field type.
• A navigation control.
• A Colleague Viewer that uses lookups in Active Directory by using Windows Communication Foundation.
• A Silverlight picture viewer from a SharePoint picture library.
• A visual how-to center, created in Silverlight and based on a SharePoint list, for viewing videos.

Microsoft's Blueprint initiative is meant to teach developers how to properly use Microsoft technologies. Unlike the usual collections of examples, their focus is more on how one should use a given library than simply showing what is possible.
